We are K-publishing! Kids’ Own Publishing and Julie Choi from the University of Melbourne will be running fortnightly Saturday afternoon workshops at the Immigration Museum for children of all backgrounds to engage with traditional and contemporary Korean art forms, and collaboratively author a unique, Australian children’s Korean picture-book.
Korean language and culture are becoming part of Australian kids’ everyday lives – from K-Pop artists at the Rod Laver Arena, to the new Koreatown on Healeys Lane and the global film sensation ‘K-Pop Demon Hunters’ …
The K-Publishing workshop series covers all this and more! Talented local artists will guide children in super fun dance, food, puppetry, language and dress-ups activities.
Kids' Own Publishing love making books by kids, for kids. Julie Choi brings unique expertise in ‘translanguaging’ – the way children naturally draw on all their languages to communicate and make meaning. The K-publishing workshops will offer a fluid language space in which children can be language learners, language sharers, or both!
The artwork, writing and photographic record produced by kids in each session will become content for a picture book that will be shaped collaboratively by the participants throughout the program.
There will be seven fortnightly workshops in total.
The sessions will be open to children aged 7 to 12.
We encourage participants to attend all seven workshops or as many as practicable to enjoy the experience of co-creating a publication.
The book will be launched on the 25th of July.
K-Publishing: Korean Arts and Publishing for All Kids is presented in partnership with the Immigration Museum with support from the Australian Government and The University of Melbourne.
