Drawing Under the Dome

Saturday 6 December

Draw inspiration from Melbourne’s iconic Royal Exhibition Building in this immersive drawing workshop.

Presented in partnership with the Italian Australia Foundation, this 90-minute session explores the Italian origins of linear perspective and its lasting impact on how we represent architecture and space.

Led by artist Richard Payne, you’ll be introduced to the breakthroughs of 15th-century art, including Filippo Brunelleschi’s invention of classical linear perspective, and how Renaissance artists such as Masaccio, Leonardo da Vinci and Raphael used this system to create depth and harmony in their work.

As you sketch beneath the opulent dome and detailed interior of this UNESCO World Heritage-listed building, learn practical techniques for observing light, form and spatial depth, and see the Royal Exhibition Building through a new artistic lens.

Participants are encouraged to bring their own preferred drawing materials; however, a selection of supplies will be available on the day.

This program has been made possible thanks to the generous support of the Italian Australian Foundation.
